J-22 ORAO Aircraft Modernization Program

The J-22 ORAO attack aircraft is a 1974 monoplane design of CAS (close support action), ground attack and tactical reconnaissance profiles. This aircraft has a capacity of carrying up to 2,800 kg of weapons. In its long life, the J-22 has proven to be an extremely reliable aircraft with extremely positive combat use throughout its flight history.

As the aircraft was designed in the 1970s, it was necessary to provide new system adaptability and add more capabilities to the aircraft. Therefore, a modernization program was created and Teleoptik Gyroscopes was selected to perform the upgrade.

This upgrade gives the aircraft the ability to use next-generation missiles and guided bombs, as well as to use conventional unguided weapons with high precision with the help of several new systems added to the aircraft.

The systems consist of:

  • 8 and 6 inch multifunctional color displays
  • The existing HUD becoming a 6-inch color display for ballistics calculations in CCIP mode, enabling attacks in all weather conditions, day and night.
  • Airborne mission computer for data collection, analysis and system management
  • Flight Operational Program, the software that integrates the entire system
  • Weapons management system for complete independent weapons control
  • Electro-optical system as the eyes of the system, providing thermal imaging for precise air-to-ground target engagement during day and night in various weather conditions and a laser rangefinder for calculating ballistic information
  • Integrating a complete state-of-the-art inertial navigation and air data system, providing the most accurate position, attitude and speed/altitude data
  • Including a HOTAS (hands-on throttle and stick) control system and user interface on all displays for the pilot and weapons operator in the second/rear cabin.
